Hepatic impairment
- Dosage should be reduced in the elderly where there is an impairment of hepatic function.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
Pregnancy
Use only if potential benefit outweighs risk. Consider giving folic acid 5mg daily throughout pregnancy.
Breastfeeding
Discuss with pharmacy. Risk of haemolytic anaemia; although significant amount in milk, risk to infant very small unless infant is G6PD deficient.
Additional information
- Patients with G6PD deficiency more susceptible to haemolysis.
- Counsel patients on long term treatment to recognise signs and symptoms of blood disorders.
- Regular blood counts are recommended in patients with severe anaemia or renal impairment: weekly for the 1st month, then monthly for 6 months, then semi-annually.
