Interpretation of antibiotic sensitivity

Bacterial/fungal culture results will usually be accompanied by a list of antibiotic sensitivities (antibiogram). Interpret as follows:

Sensitive

Use antibiotic at normal dose

Sensitive at Higher Doses

Organism is sensitive, but you must use a higher dose of the antibiotic. (See advice below)

Resistant

Do not use this antibiotic

A list of commonly used antibiotics is below. Recommended doses of any other antibiotics can be checked on the EUCAST website here.

Cautions:

Contact Micro/ID for advice if one of the following is present:

  • moderate to severe renal impairment
  • extremes of body weight
  • significant drug interactions
