Adult

FESS and Rhinosinusitis, Chronic

  • Treatment indicated if mucopurulent discharge from sinuses is confirmed by functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS). Treat for up to 14 days.
  • For prescribing use 'Rhinology powerplan' on EPR. 
  • For patients with penicillin allergy label consider penicillin allergy assessment and delabelling

Post-op decolonisation

For eradication of nasal Staphylococcus aureus

Preferred: Naseptin® (chlorhexidine + neomycin) nasal cream

Apply a small amount (about the size of a match head) to both nostrils BD for 10 days

NB: Contra-indicated if patient (or carer) has allergy to peanuts, soya, chlorhexidine or neomycin. 

 

Alternative: Bactroban® (mupirocin (2% w/w mupirocin free acid)) nasal ointment

Apply a small amount (about the size of a match head) to both nostrils TDS for 5 days

If mucopurulent discharge from sinuses is confirmed by functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS)

Preferred: 

doxycycline 100mg po bd

Alternative: 

clarithromycin 500mg po bd
