Infections in gynaecology

Warning

Includes:

  • ·         Bartholins abscess
  • ·         Surgical site infection
  • ·         Endometrial infection (after hysteroscopy/ missed miscarriage)
  • ·         PID (see also link to Sexual health)

Mild/ moderate infection and oral switch

Typically 3-5 days treatment

Preferred: includes for non-severe penicillin allergy

cefalexin 1g tds po (including mild penicillin allergy) +/- metronidazole 400mg tds po

Alternative: includes for severe penicillin allergy or if MRSA positive

 cotrimoxazole 960mg bd po +/- metronidazole 400mg tds po 

 

Severe infection

Review daily for oral switch

·         Preferred: cefazolin 2g tds + metronidazole 500mg tds iv or 400mg tds po

·         Alternative: severe penicillin allergy: cotrimoxazole 960mg bd iv or po + metronidazole 400mg tds po (500mg tds iv if oral not possible)
