UTI, catheter associated (pregnant)
- If the catheter has been in situ for more than 7 days:
- Check for blockage and consider removing catheter or, if this cannot be done, changing it as soon as possible
- If catheter removed: send a mid-stream urine
- If catheter changed: send a catheter specimen from the new catheter following its insertion
- Ensure the lab are aware of any antibiotic treatment and that it is a catheter specimen.
- Urinalysis should NOT be performed. Diagnosis should be suspected on the basis of symptoms.
- Symptoms of UTI in catheterised patients include fever, delirium, urinary symptoms and sepsis. If sepsis suspected follow Sepsis guidelines.
Treat for 7 days according to sensitivity test results.

For patient with lower UTI symptoms: For antimicrobial choice see UTI, lower, non-severe (pregnant)
- Review choice of antibiotic when culture results are available
- Regularly assess the need for catheterisation
- Discuss with Micro/ID if needed
For patient with upper UTI symptoms: For antimicrobial choice see UTI, upper or acute pyelonephritis (pregnant)
- Review choice of antibiotic when culture results are available
- Regularly assess the need for catheterisation
- Discuss with Micro/ID if needed
