Diabetic Foot Infection, Mild

Mild diabetic foot infection is defined as:-

Local foot infection (as indicated by 2 or more of the following)

  • local swelling or induration
  • erythema (between 0.5cm and 2cm around ulcer)
  • local tenderness or pain
  • local warmth
  • purulent discharge

It is essential that cases of diabetic foot infections are managed in conjunction with Podiatry. An assessment of vascular sufficiency should be performed.

Cases are typically treated with oral antibiotics for 7 days.

Review empirical treatment within 48-72 hours

Preferred

flucloxacillin 500mg -1g po qds

Alternative

For penicillin allergy (non-severe and severe) and for MRSA positive patients: 

doxycycline 100mg po bd

Or

co-trimoxazole 960mg po bd
