Enteric fever / Typhoid

Consult Paediatric Infectious Diseases

Preferred (including non-severe penicillin allergy)

ceftriaxone 80mg/kg (Max 4g) iv OD (if 1 month old or older)

Switch to oral antibiotics once sensitivities known:

6 months and over: azithromycin 10mg/kg (max 500mg) po OD for total 7 days 

Under 6 months: Consult Paediatric Infectious Diseases

Alternative (severe penicillin allergy)

6 months and over: azithromycin 10mg/kg (Max 500mg) po OD for total 7 days 

Under 6 months: Consult Paediatric Infectious Diseases

If IV treatment is needed consider: ciprofloxacin* 10mg/kg (Max 400 mg) iv TDS for total 10 days 

If patient returning from area where high resistance to ciprofloxacin reported - consult Paediatric infectious diseases

 

* Note: Ciprofloxacin may induce convulsions in patients with or without a history of convulsions – use with caution.
