Preferred
rifampicin po (see dosing table)
Give for 4 days.

Alternative
For individuals unable to tolerate, or develop an adverse reaction to rifampicin:
First line
ceftriaxone IV or IM
Give for 2 days.

Second line
ciprofloxacin* po
Give for 5 days.

*ciprofloxacin may induce convulsions in patients with or without a history of convulsions – use with caution
