Haemophilus influenzae type b, prophylaxis

Preferred

rifampicin po (see dosing table)

Give for 4 days. 

Age

rifampicin oral dose

1 month up to 3 months

10 mg/kg OD

3 months up to 12 years

20 mg/kg (Max 600mg) OD

 12 years and older

600mg OD

Alternative

For individuals unable to tolerate, or develop an adverse reaction to rifampicin:

First line

ceftriaxone IV or IM 

Give for 2 days. 

Age  ceftriaxone IV/IM dose 
1 month up to 12 years  50mg/kg (Max 1g) OD
12 years and older  1g OD

 

Second line 

ciprofloxacin* po 

Give for 5 days.

Age  ciprofloxacin oral dose 
2 years - 4 years  125mg po BD
5 years -12 years  250mg po BD
12 years and older  500mg po BD

 

*ciprofloxacin may induce convulsions in patients with or without a history of convulsions – use with caution
