Post-tonsillectomy bleed

There is limited evidence on the use of antibiotics post-tonsillectomy but antibiotics may be considered for an individual patient when infection is suspected as the cause of bleeding post-tonsillectomy.

 

Preferred: 

amoxicillin 500mg po tds for up to 3 days 

 

Alternative for penicillin allergy (non-severe and severe): 

doxycycline 100mg po bd for up to 3 days

Consider penicillin allergy assessment and delabelling
